Deadliest Catch: CatchCon 2009.

catchcon1 The “first annual” Deadliest Catch fan convention was held here in Seattle on Saturday, April 25. Two months ago. Feels like yesterday! Your dusty reporter, Hiro, attended for 2 out of the 6 hours and survived to blog about it. The highlight of the day was putting my arm around deckhand Matt of the Northwestern. He was a little sweaty, very angry about having to take photos with fans, and extremely bloated. Perfect! After the jump, photos from the Wizard and the Northwestern, more crew-fun, and a little sexy-talk!

Death Does Not Take An Unpaid Furlough: Jackson & Fawcett Edition

n1259319452_2638Sources more reputable than TMZ’s twitter feed have confirmed than Michael Jackson has died. This on the heels of Farrah Fawcett’s sadly expected death from cancer, and kinda sorta on the heels of Ed McMahon, thus confirming these things always come in threes. Or not. Let’s face it people die all the time, you can always lump them into a group of three, unless said people are on my death pool list, in which case they will never die, ever.

Movie Moments: Keep Dreaming, Maniac

pelham123w.jpgI was super happy to find out the original version of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three was airing on the CW last night. It’s not the greatest movie of all time, but there was something about the very New York-ness of it that I really loved, or at least what seemed very New York to my Californian eyes. It’s part of a whole genre of 1970s movies that really made the city another character in the movie, and not in the “let’s go shopping” fantasy land of Sex and the City, but more of a pimps, gun-violence and surly people kind of way. I don’t know why that appeals to me, but there it is. Plus, it has one the sexiest rolling in money scenes evah! Clip after the jump!

I’ll See Your Jizz Pants, And Raise You A Thigh Perm…

permOkay, so you know how “… in my pants!” has been my catch phrase since my days at TOS? For the record, this is so not what I was talking about.

Still, I bet you’re just dying to know the story behind this shot, aren’t ya?

(Hint: It has nothing to do with DVDA.)

NBC Upfronts: Summer schedule

logo_nbc.gifThe upfronts are here, the upfronts are here!!! For those not aware, the “upfront” is when a network reveals their upcoming slate of shows for the fall season to advertisers and the rest of the world. It’s also when you find out what shows are not renewed for the fall. NBC, because they want to be a dick, decided to have their upfronts 2 weeks before everyone else’s so we get to see what they have in store for us. Hopefully it will be better than last years debacle called the “NBC experience”. Today I bring you their summer schedule. Tomorrow we’ll look and see what they have for us this fall. And stick with MSR as we give our reaction to the rest of the networks upcoming schedules as they become available.

America’s Next Top Model: You’re Feeling Sleepy

You may have noticed that I’m more than a little bit late with the ANTM recaps recently. It’s the usual excuses: work, illness, fighting Somali pirates. They’ll be up soon, swearsies! In the meantime, try a some self hypnosis with this flash animation I made of Allison.

Enjoy!

Middle aged British lady sings, country swoons

Many of you have probably already seen this with it becoming the “it” YouTube clip of the week. Even Ashton Kutchner was twittering about it which should just automatically make it lame, but its not. A dowdy middle aged English woman goes on the British version of America’s got Talent and blows them all away. I especially like the shots of snotty kids in the audience beforehand laughing at her. If you don’t mind the annoying cuts to the hosts of the show babbling English slang through an unrecognizable British accent and the vast wasteland of bad teeth that is the audience, It’s actually kind of heartwarming. Saturday Night Live: Let’s Just Say I’m Glad Charles Rocket Isn’t Around to See This

gilly1I’ve been a fan of SNL for a long time now. I remember the years withBrad Hall Terry Sweeney, A. Whitney Brown all the way up to today. I’ve suffered through the good times and the bad, with the good times coming about 20% of the time. So it was with delight that I was finally able to use the “I’ve never missed a show in 20 years” when they had their resurgence this year with Tina Fey’s Palin. It reminded me of that line in stripes when Bill Murrays girlfriend complained about him ordering out and spending all night listening to Tito Puente albums;

Tito Puente is gonna be dead, and you’ll say “I’ve been listening to him for years. He’s fabulous.”

But this last week was another example of how bad they can be. In a totally phoned in show with a forgettable lame guest (Sac Efron) we were treated to a lazy bunch of sketches that bombed one after the other. From the opening lame Obama sketch with Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis doing awful impressions of the President and Vice President, to yet another awful Will Forte singing on update bit. It was just crap from start to finish.

sg-dub and I were watching it this weekend and this is what we don’t get. This show has at least 20 writers. 20 people cannot come up with, at tops, 10 mildly funny sketches? I mean shit, give sg-dub ten minutes and we can work up something. And on top of that, the show never goes more than 3 weeks without a break. Is it really that hard? 20 people can’t come up with about 40 minutes of sketch comedy? They need a break every few weeks because of the “grind” of having Will Forte do his lame reverse Bon Jovi sketch? Really? But it was Kristen Wiig who provide the biggest disappointment…
